Jan 2026 at Downsides Nurseries

New shrubs available at Downside Nurseries

Plant highlights with approx HxS sizes

Acca sellowiana (1.5-2.5 x 1.5-2.5m) – this is one we do ourselves, but it takes months to root, so we were glad to get extra. Evergreen, with Hypericum-like red and white flowers, it does need a really sunny position to flower well.

Akebia quinate – chocolate vine (8-12m x wider than 8m) – but the cream coloured one which is more unusual

Azara serrata  (2.5-4 x 2.5-4m) – glossy evergreen leaves and fragrant yellow flowers – another one for a sunny site.

Coronilla valentina subsp glauca  (0.5-1 x 0.5-1m) – grey-green evergreen leaves and yellow pea-type flowers all summer

Eucryphia × nymansensis – Nymansay evergreen with a wonderful explosion of white flowers from late summer to autumn; bee friendly.

Also, Nyman’s silver with white edges to the leaves.  These are the most reliably hardy varieties of Eucryphia
Both growing to approx higher than 12m x 2.5-4m spread

Lonicera periclymenum  ‘Chick and choc’ (.6 x .85m) Lonicera periclymenum is our native honeysuckle – the perfume is wonderful, but they can be sprawling and not all modern gardens have room for one.  This is a dwarf variety which can be grown in a border or patio tub. An excellent innovation.  Maroon and cream flowers from June to September or even longer.
