In the big glasshouse, we have the ‘Gold’ series, a modern hybrid designed to flower around Christmas both indoors and out. Also, Christmas Carol, a smaller plant with clear white flowers, a hybrid of the Christmas Rose (Helleborus niger) but much more robust and easier to grow. (Incidentally if you have ever wondered why a white flowered plant is called niger it is because the roots are black)!
In the second tunnel, we have a wide selection of Helleborus orientalis, these are plants of the early spring and give a long-lasting show because what appear to be petals are actually bracts. Hellebores are excellent plants for brightening up a shady spot early in the year. Particularly recommended is “Molly’s White” one of the ’Frostkiss’ series, long-flowering and resilient.
