Rootstocks

We can order from July, but not later than early February. For trained trees and trees on dwarf rootstocks early ordering is essential as quantities are limited.

Fruit trees are usually grafted on to rootstocks of varying vigour which determine the final height of the tree but there are genetically dwarf varieties of Apricot and Peach which can be grown in containers.

Apples
The normal rootstock for a small garden tree is M26. M27 is suitable for a container and M9 s now the most widely used commercial rootstock as the trees are trained on wires and the fruit can be picked from the ground. Orchard trees are M1116, MM106M, M111and M25 in ascending order.
NB: The m stands for Malling, the Research Station which developed the rootstocks. MM is Malling-Merton.

Pears
Dwarf, Quince C, Quince Eline, semi vigorous Quince A, very vigorous Pyrus communis, Pyrus Kirchensaller

Cherry
Dwarf Gisella 5 semi vigorous Colt

Plum/Gage
Semi dwarf VVA 1, semi vigorous St. Julian A, Wavit

Damson
Semi dwarf VVA 1

We do not usually keep the more vigorous orchard trees in stock as they rapidly outgrow their containers, but we are happy to order them for you.
