Trees – Espaliers, Fan Trained and Step-overs
There are few more ornamental ways of covering a wall or fence than with a fan or espalier fruit tree. Our trained fruit trees are in! It’s a really good time to plant out now, but don’t leave for too long… We have Espaliers, Step-overs and Fan Trained.
If you’ve forgotten to order your favourite variety there may still be time to help you, subject to availability. Call Lorraine before the end of October on 01225 01225 862 392 or email her.
We’ll be updating our stock list for Espaliers and Step Ups on our website in the next few days – we’ll put this month’s date so you know when it’s up!
Quick Refresher:
The Espalier option – where the growth is restricted to two or three orderly ‘tiers’ – is used for apples and pears only.
The Fan Trained system gives a ‘fan’ shaped tree with multiple branches from the base. This style works really well with stone fruit.
Step-overs are where the two main lateral branches start about 18” up from the ground and then the fruit comes on spurs off the lateral branches.
At Downside our Espalier and Fan Trained fruit trees come in 12L pots whilst the Step-overs in 10L pots.
