November at Downsides Nurseries

Bare root hedging & Evergreens (as at 24 Oct 2025)

Bare Root hedging

Bare root hedging will not be available for a few weeks. The plants have to lose their leaves and go dormant before it is safe to lift them, so we are dependent on the weather.. Prices for evergreen rootballed stock are starting to come in. We mostly buy this to order, so contact Nerys to discuss your requirements. She is usually available Saturday-Wednesday. We carry a good stock of potted Cherry laurel (Prunus l. Rotundifolia ) and Portuguese Laurel (Prunus lusitanica) and also some Griselinia in a range of sizes, but if we don’t have what you are looking for, please email Nerys for a quote on info@downsidenurseries.co.uk

Evergreens – all to do with the mycorrhiza

If you are wondering why evergreens always come potted or rootballed, it is all to do with the mycorrhiza. Evergreens have their own special mycorrhizal support system, without which they cannot survive; these live in the soil and not partly in the root tips as with deciduous species. You can buy mycorrhiza as a planting stimulant, but as to which kind you are actually getting is not specified, it is not a lot of help. If you do use it must have direct contact with the roots.
